Create a daily self-care ritual to establish good habits. The ritual should include care from head to toe and everything in between. Begin with your hair. Washing and rinsing your hair is fine, but avoid overworking it with blow dryers and curling irons. That’ll burn your hair and leave you with split ends. Wash your face with a non-abrasive cleanser and pat it dry. Scrubbing it tears and pulls the skin in ways that’s not pretty later on. Check your eyebrows for strays. Pluck or tweeze the strays when necessary to keep your tailored arched shape. For the eyes, the best thing to keep them alert and free from dark circles is plenty of rest. Make sure you get at least six hours of sleep a night and seven when you can. Less than that will leaving you feeling as tired as you’ll look. Your lips should be lined with a lip liner so your lipstick doesn’t smear or bleed and you should wear a good lipstick that doesn’t melt when you kiss.

· Your teeth are precious and you want to keep your real ones as long as you can. Brush them at least twice a day to keep the plaque off and your breath fresh. It’s a good idea to keep a toothbrush and a small tube of strong toothpaste in your purse just so you always have them with you. Another note on teeth, the whiter they are, the younger you look. Avoid substances that stain your teeth or brush immediately following coffee, tea, tobacco, cooked beets and carrot juice. Wear sunscreen. Every time you go outside for any length of time, wear at least SPF 15 and SPF 30 if you’re smart. If you don’t have sunscreen with you, cover yourself with long sleeves and long pants. Wear sunglasses when outdoors or a big straw hat to deflect the bright sunrays. When you go to bed at night, gently apply liquid vitamin E (available at most drugstores) under and around your eyes, and on any visible wrinkles. You can also use it on the back of your hands for a youthful look. By morning, you’ll see a remarkable improvement. Avoid eating late at night. You want your digestive system to be sleeping when you are. Overworked organs make you feel exhausted not refreshed in the morning. Drink plenty of water every day. It refreshes dry skin just like watering a drooping plant. Exercise every day. It doesn’t have to be much, just enough to get your heart pumping fast. Walking, yard work, housework or chasing kids will jumpstart your engine and keep you young. And most important practice moderation. Excessive behaviors can kill you. Overeating, too much work, too much sleep, too much fighting…it will all age you prematurely. Balance, that’s what you need to keep you young, a healthy life of balance.

  • Use a sponge to blend foundation flawlessly
  • If your skin is dry, use a blended foundation cream
  • Watch and conceal color changes and uneven skin tone
  • Your skin becomes thinner. Moisturize your eyes before applying eye shadows
  • Although most skin damage from the sun is acquired before the age of 20, sunscreens help keep sunspots and wrinkles away

Skin sense for the 50s and beyond

After age 50, your skin may be thinner, and skin renewal takes 28 or so days, bringing deeper character lines and drier skin.

  • Use sun protection!
  • Use superior moisturizing and hydration
  • Use dramatic lip colors, with a lip-lining pencil
  • A pink-based powder can soften lines and wrinkles
  • Experiment with sculptured brows for shape and polish
  • Use powder lightly. The drier the skin, the more it shows
  • Use elegant eye makeup with subtle shades and matte colors
  • Use lighter foundation coverage and a moisturizing foundation as well

Brighten your smile

Avoid teeth stains. Brighten your smile and teeth with a whitening tooth polish. If that doesn't work, consult your dentist about bleaching. Consider having metal fillings replaced with white.

Good Sleep

You look younger after a good sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, these should help:

  • Establish a regular bed-time and stick to it
  • Take a warm bath within two hours of going to bed
  • Set your bedroom temperature for optimum relaxation
  • Sleep on soft, lightweight sheets and a lightweight blanket

Good Humor & Confidence

Smile and greet people you meet. Give a sincere compliment to at least three people each day. Your facial muscles will relax, you can put some energy in your steps. Walk tall and confidently. Learn to shine with confidence and people will notice that you are younger than your years.
