Lomilomi is traditional Hawaiian massage
with a spiritual component. A lomilomi massage
requires loving hands and includes skill and compassion. Practitioners use
their hands, forearms, elbows, knees, feet and even special sticks (pu'ili) and
smooth lava pebbles (pohaku).
Lomilomi Massage - The Loving Touch
Native Hawaiian people, in their isolation from the world,
developed profound skills in the areas of healing and relationships. A basic
healing skill is lomilomi - Hawaiian massage.
Lomilomi is based on a sense of connectedness, transmitted by
loving hands and a loving heart. The long flowing strokes, combined with a
loving touch, is very relaxing. It helps us find our inner pu'uhonua -
our
inner place of refuge - a place where we can change limiting beliefs and and
unwanted fixations.
Although many people now teach Hawaiian lomilomi, few were
taught by native Hawaiian healers and kumu (teachers). Very few people
have the blessing of a Hawaiian healing lineage.
Lomilomi commences peacefully. You feel hands gently resting
on your back. You may hear a short Hawaiian blessing or prayer, asking for your
healing. You may be asked about what healing you want. The massage may then flow
intuitively or follow a sequence.

Always ho'oponopono before lomilomi said Aunty Mona Kahele -
and she should know. She was born in Miloli'i around 1910 and trained by her kahuna grandfather
in South Kona at a young age. Auntie Mona was honored by the governor of Hawaii
for her social work. |
Aunty Mona Kahele described her tests of acceptance
and initiation that few modern students would even consider. I studied
ho'oponopono with Aunty Mona and lomilomi with
her cousin - Aunty Margaret Machado.
Aunty Margaret Machado
Aunty Margaret Machado founded
the Hawaii Massage School. From her beach house near Kealakekua Bay, Aunty Margaret
Machado attracted students of Hawaiian lomilomi from all over the world ... and I
feel fortunate to stand amongst them. (In August 2006, I attended
her 90th birthday party there - her body died in 2009).

For a month I slept on Aunty Margaret's
lanai (balcony) with the sounds of wind in coconut palms and endless
ocean surf. During that busy month I learned her lomilomi massage magic . Martyn Kahekili Carruthers

Aunty Maile Napoleon
Waimea is a town with a split personality. The eastern side is
of Waimea is wet - and the western side dry. Right in the middle, Aunty Maile
Napoleon teaches the lomilomi of Papa kalua kaiahua and temple style
lomilomi and how to use pu'ili sticks.
Aunty Maile is known for her smile and her aloha. She
has many skills besides lomi lomi, including la'au lapa'au (herbal medicine) and
lava carving and she is a master lei maker. She has given our students many
stories and experiences of Hawaiian Aloha.
Aunty Maile's Kohala grandmother taught Maile to pray out loud
(pule) before and after lomi, to lomi with love and that hands are only
tools. After studying the huna of Serge King, Aunty Maile learned the lomi of
Papa Kalua Kaiahua , a respected master of lomilomi and la'au lapa'au
on the island of Maui.
Aunty Maile ("Call me Smiley!") Napoleon has endless
stories of the 'old days'. She said that the ruined village of Lapakahi
(now an archeological park where Maile once worked) was a medical college
for pre-contact Hawaiian healers. (Aunty Maile blames the now-defunct sugar
industry for diverting the rivers and streams in that area, causing West
Kohala to become arid.)
