Symptoms of Tinnitus
Tinnitus refers to a high pitched hissing
or ringing in the ears. Acute tinnitus may follow a loud noise, air
pressure change or antibiotic treatment, while chronic tinnitus may accompany
hearing loss or chronic hypertension.
Tinnitus may cause irritability and anxiety, and may impair concentration or
sleep. Acute tinnitus may be accompanied by ear pain and/or dizziness, but
rarely lasts more than a few minutes.
Chronic tinnitus usually builds up gradually,
can be strong and loud although the
intensity may vary.
Causes of Chronic Tinnitus
As chronic tinnitus usually develops slowly, it may be difficult to
identify a single, specific cause. Some causes of tinnitus are one or more of:
- Blocked external auditory canal or fluid in the inner
ear
- Inflammation of the eardrum, the middle ear, or the
inner ear
- Inflammation or tumor near the acoustic or cochlear
nerves
- Physical damage (from SCUBA diving, rapid pressure changes)
- Physical damage from cell phones and headphones, etc
- Physical damage from excessive noise
- Impacted teeth, infected sinuses or tonsillitis
- Side effects of medications (e.g. quinine; large
amounts of aspirin)
- Hormonal imbalances (may be related to disease or drug
use)
- Hereditary ear diseases (e.g. malformed inner ear
structure)
- Psychosomatic causes (e.g. fulfilling family
expectations)
- Stimulants such as in coffee, tea, soft drinks,
alcoholic drinks, spices and food additives.
Treatment of Tinnitus
Specific therapies for tinnitus are uncertain, sometimes
expensive and hard to find. No therapy is generally accepted,
or guarantees improvement, and it seems unlikely that tinnitus can be
stabilized in a short time.
However, people with tinnitus can control stress and/or
depression and get enough sleep. If sleep is difficult due to noise or pain, a
medical doctor can prescribe appropriate medication. Some herbal sedatives
may help sleep, and dehydration can be avoided. A background of variable sound
or noises may improve tinnitus.
Control Stress
. Control Depression .
Pain Control
Tinnitus may be improved by substances
which calm or numb the nerves. Some caffeine-free painkillers (such as aspirin or
paracetamol in normal dosage) may reduce tinnitus. Tinnitus
may be temporarily worsened by some medications and nutritional supplements.
It may take months or more to gain significant improvement.
Self-treatment is a more realistic option for
stabilizing tinnitus at weaker intensities. This can be assisted by
hypnosis/hypnotherapy and/or systemic coaching.
Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy
Although hypnosis is a well-researched clinical technique,
it retains an aura of mystery. Hypnosis is used to treat both psychological
and medical problems. The possibilities of
using hypnosis to treat tinnitus have received little attention.
During hypnosis, people can focus their attention more
profoundly than in a normal waking state. In a hypnotic state, people can
experience and change
both their emotions and physical functioning. As subsonic tinnitus would be
inaudible, hypnotic coaching provides
possibilities for changing the subjective volume or pitch of tinnitus suing
direct suggestion, isomorphic and interactive metaphors. Hypnotherapy is
integrated into Soulwork Coaching - we train our coaches in hypnotic
language, to support clients who enter spontaneous trance.
Therapeutic Coaching
Systemic Solutions combines success coaching,
systemic relationship counseling, hypnotherapy and emotional management to provide a
complete system for personal development that can solve many physical, mental
and relationship symptoms.
If tinnitus is due in part to relationship, family or
workplace stress, or to depression (and the toxic results of depression), then
our coaching may provide speedy
relief.
Systemic coaching can evaluate the
subjective response of tinnitus, which may identify safe ways to control the symptoms. A
systemic
approach may only require minor lifestyle adjustments to control chronic tinnitus, which can
gradually become less problematic and may eventually disappear.
Our systemic coaching supports a person to evaluate their life and lifestyle,
and to change what does not support health.
NOTE: Consult a physician about any opinions
or recommendations about any medical condition.
